First of two games against Luton in 3 days
On this day (May 13th) in 1988 we played Luton Town on a Friday evening. Nothing strange about that, except the rest of the league had already completed all of their games and we still had to play Luton twice. A fixture backlog had meant that both our previous games against the Hatters had been postponed and this was the first available date for us to meet. We drew 1-1 in Friday's game and had the same scoreline for the return fixture which was in 2 days time on Sunday afternoon. Between the games was the FA Cup Final, making this a rare occasion when league games were finished after the Cup. We also lost in the Semi-Final of the cup to Liverpool, meaning that a victory then would probably have left us playing both games after the Final!
