EUROPEAN CUP PLAYERS (1979, 1980, 1981)

These are the 22 players who appeared in the European Cup games of 1979, 1980 and 1981. The format in the 80's was a single-elimination knockout over 2 legs, with each round having a random draw of opponents, without seeds.

Appearances
Four of the players (Peter Shilton, Garry Birtles, John Robertson and Larry Lloyd) appeared in all 20 games, while Raimondo Ponte only appeared in one game, coming on as a sub in the first leg against CSKA Sofia. (However, he did make two appearances against us in the 1978 Quarter Finals, when he was a player for Grasshoppers Zurich!)

Trevor Francis's debut was, of course, in the first final where he scored the only goal.

Opposition
Interestingly, our first ever game in the European Cup saw us drawn against the then-current two-time holders, Liverpool, who we beat 2-0 on aggregate.
Our final game in the European Cup was as two-time holders ourselves, when we also lost 2-0 on aggregate, to CSKA Sofia.
